The first trailer for Moonfall featured a glowing red image of a moon falling to Earth. It still took a few months until Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi disaster film hit theaters – a time full of anticipation.
The Independence Day director’s blockbuster could not live up to these expectations. Moonfall contains everything that fills Roland Emmerich’s filmography – Orgies of destruction, bad jokes, big pictures, flat characters and a sympathetic penchant for gigantism. But the film doesn’t give a complete picture.
What is the sci-fi disaster Moonfall about?
It had to happen like this: the moon, which has been orbiting the earth for thousands of years, will dislodged from its orbit by an unknown force and suddenly heads towards the earth on a collision course. The task of stopping him falls to a small group of astronauts who first have to put aside their differences to save the world.

Nothing came of the two planned sequels, which Emmerich said were supposed to be even crazier.
