Attention, follow spoiler!

Obi-Wan Kenobi begins with pain. A lot of pain. From the very first few minutes, the new Star Wars series gets us excited darkest point of the star saga back: Where just before in the Jedi temple on Coruscant there was harmony and unity, deadly shots are being fired. As part of Order 66, clone troopers storm the compound and eliminate one Jedi after the other. They don’t even stop at young men.

After Boba Fett’s book showed us Order 66 from Baby Yoda’s perspective earlier this year, Obi-Wan Kenobi gives us another look at the greatest defeat of that order, who would bring the light to the galaxy. But there is not much left of this light. Only laser beams flash through the suffering before we find ourselves ten years later in the desolate desert sands of Tatooine.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is a touching Star Wars series about pain and loneliness

After the devastating events of Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) hides on the remote Outer Rim planet, living a simple life: not even in the face of blatant injustice does he contradict the Overseer about his poorly paid work. No lightsaber, no mind tricks: Obi-Wan has isolated himself from the Force as much as he has from his past.

Even when he’s among people, his gaze speaks of loneliness: Ewan McGregor plays his character from the prequels as broken man, who finds it difficult to follow up on the brisk sayings of the past. When he talks to Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton) about young Luke Skywalker (Grant Feely), it’s usually words of concern. His sister is said to be causing him even more concern.

The first major twist in the series brings in Leia Organa (Vivien Lyra Blair). Where on Tatooine the shadows of the Inquisition threaten to smother the last spark of the Jedi, we delve into the hopeful world of Alderaan a. Long before the planet is pulverized by the Death Star, 10-year-old Leia is running through the woods exploring. With the arrival of fierce bounty hunter Vect Nokru (Flea), carelessness comes to an abrupt end.

Vivien Lyra Blair shakes up the Obi-Wan Kenobi series as a young Princess Leia

Obi-Wan Kenobi puts his protagonist in a tricky situation right in the first episode: After a decade of going into hiding, he has to abandon his charge on Tatooine to save Leia, which leads us to the of Neon lights drenched planet Daiyu leads. There’s no signal coming in or out here – as if Obi-Wan couldn’t be isolated any more. The encounter with Leia is all the more confrontational.

Quick witted, skeptical and inquisitive, Vivien Lyra Blair’s Leia bears a striking resemblance to Carrie Fisher’s version of the character from the original trilogy in everything she does. Despite the opening Episode 3 flashback, Obi-Wan Kenobi does one in his second episode significantly larger dialogue with Star Wars a. Almost every major Leia moment in Kenobi is echoed in Episode 4.

One scene in particular gains importance: When Obi-Wan dies shortly before his death Skywalker twins reunited sees resonates more than the adventure with Luke in the background. The Obi-Wan series reinforces the bond between Leia and the Jedi. In addition, she gives weight to her words of help in the opening minutes of Star Wars. As a prequel, Obi-Wan Kenobi does a great job.

The most exciting character in Obi-Wan Kenobi so far is Reva aka the Third Sister

The new Star Wars series is though not only linked to the Skywalker saga. It also picks up on an important element from the Star Wars Rebels animated series: The Grand Inquisitor (Rupert Friend) strikes Tatooine with his followers. He’s looking for a Jedi who survived Order 66. As it turns out, this is not Obi-Wan at all. That’s where Reva (Moses Ingram) comes in.

The second big kenobi surprise is this Positioning of Reva as a villain. She is an outsider in the Inquisition circle, interested only in capturing Obi-Wan in order to win the favor of Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen). For this she even disregards the Grand Inquisitor with a valid argument. No sooner has the terrifying villain arrived in the live-action sector than he’s dead.

Nevertheless, Reva does not achieve the goal she set herself. At the end of the first two episodes, the tide turns: Obi-Wan, who has received no answer from his old master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) even in the dark cave of Tatooine, is found together with Leia on the run, while Reva is the one who stays behind in the loneliness of the night over the rooftops of Daiyu.

One final shock: the Obi-Wan opening ends with a nightmarish Darth Vader moment

Obi-Wan Kenobi delivers some memorable moments. Many are small and inconspicuous, such as the guilty one “Thanks”uttered by Obi-Wan to Owen after the Great Reva Confrontation on Tatooine. In the final seconds, the second episode delivers an all the louder bang for that by ending Obi-Wan and Anakin after ten years with a incredible cut merges.

Before Obi-Wan can flee Daiyu with Leia, Reva rams a metaphorical dagger into his heart: The news that his former student is still alive shakes him like no event since Order 66. Obi-Wan’s terrified whisper “anakin” awakened at the other end of the galaxy a monster to life, which opens its eyes menacingly and leaves nothing but pain in its wake. Goose flesh.
