The Brutalist is an epic with enormous ambitions

With The Brutalist, director Brady Corbet (Vox Lux) has made a film that is monumental in almost every respect. The running time is 215 minutes (including intermission), the story spans decades and the theme is nothing less than the myth of America as a land of opportunity.

The fictional story is about László Tóth (Adrien Brody), a Hungarian-born Jewish architectwho survived the Holocaust. After the end of World War II, he emigrated to the United States to experience the “American Dream.”

László has to endure poverty and humiliation and survives with jobs that are far below his abilities. At the same time, he is eagerly awaiting the arrival of his wife Erzsébet (Felicity Jones), who stayed behind in Europe. But László soon receives a contract with a wealthy client, Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce), who will take his life in unexpected directions.

Why the film is being compared to The Godfather and There Will Be Blood

The immigrant’s story in the United States drew widespread comparisons after its premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The film was compared to Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather and Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood, as the Independent reported. This is due to the running time, but above all because of the subject matter, after all, all three films deal with it Stories of outsiders who want to rise in American society – under all circumstances.
