First US state to ban Tiktok

The law will probably still be appealed in court.

In the United States, the state of Montana has banned the use of the Chinese-owned Tiktok video app. A state governor Greg Gianforte told about it on Twitter on Wednesday local time.

Lawmakers already decided on the ban around mid-April, but the decision still needed Gianforte’s signature. Montana is the first US state to make such a decision.

Application stores have to remove the application from their offer. If they don’t, they can be fined $10,000 (about €9,200) daily.

News channel CNN by (you switch to another service) the law is due to enter into force in January, but it is still being appealed in court.

According to the Republican governor, the decision aims to protect the private information of Montanans.

In the United States, a nationwide ban on Tiktok has also been pushed. The data security of the Chinese-owned application has raised concerns in other Western countries as well.
