At first it just sounded like a joke, when it was announced that Ridley Scott wanted to continue Gladiator. The historical epic with Russell Crowe is considered a classic, but was actually completed. Nevertheless, the director is serious and is already putting together the new cast for the sequel.
Now it’s already clear who will take on the lead role in Gladiator 2. Scott obviously has an eye on one of the biggest current shooting stars kicked out of the acting scene.

Star from acclaimed indie hit is set to become the new Gladiator 2 star
Deadline reports that Paul Mescal is set to star in the Gladiator sequel. His figure is supposed to be Lucius act, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Maximus (Russell Crowe). The cast isn’t officially finalized yet, but Mescal is already in negotiations.
Paul Mescal got his break as a lead in the BBC series Normal People opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones. The production was one Adaptation of the popular novel of the same name by Sally Rooney. Most recently, Mescal sparked hype with his starring role in Charlotte Wells’ feature debut Aftersun.
In the acclaimed drama about a fateful vacation between a young father and his daughter, Mescal in particular is widely praised for his performance. Numerous awards have already followed. So Aftersun led the Sight and Sound tops list of best movies 2022 on. Aftersun is also in 23rd place in the joint annual list of Moviepilot and FILMSTARTS.
So the ideal first star for Gladiator 2 has already been determined. Filming is slated to begin later this year. Before Mid to late 2024 we don’t expect a theatrical release.
