When Sweden’s party leaders met last, on October 8, the Hamas attack on Israel had just taken place. Since then, Israel’s extensive counter-attacks have further escalated the situation in the area and now there is full-scale war in Gaza.
Camilla Kvartoft and Anders Holmberg, who lead Agenda’s party leader debate, believe that the war in Gaza may become one of the debate’s hottest issues.

Children in Gaza are dying of starvation when aid does not arrive
Gunnar Strömmer: We cannot continue as we have been doing
– It feels very important to include this topic. It will perhaps become even more relevant with the security situation around Eurovision in Malmö, which takes place in a week, says Camilla Kvartoft.
Since the last party leader debate in SVT, Sweden has also left 200 years of formal non-alignment and become members of NATO.
– We are seeing a historic rearmament of the defense – but the parties do not agree on how this should be financed. We will debate that, says Camilla Kvartoft.
“There are big contradictions there”
Previously, Agenda had held duels between individual party leaders who have now had to leave room for audience questions. And the questions have poured in according to the presenters.
– We have received an incredible response with many questions from the viewers, says Kvartoft.
When Agenda’s editors select topics for the party leader debate, they discuss their issue for weeks, they say. When the final selection is to be made, they then select the issues they believe are most important to voters.
But there is one question that comes up particularly often: the climate.
– We feel it is particularly relevant because it is the EU election and it is an issue that is so extremely connected to the EU election, says Anders Holmberg.
– And there are also major contradictions, counters Kvarntoft.
– Well, to be honest, the contradictions are probably much greater here than in issues such as how to deal with gang crime, says Holmberg.
The party leader debate in Agenda is broadcast on Sunday at 20:00 on SVT 2 and on SVT Play.
