It all started as a low-budget project, but today productions cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Mad Max has developed from a cult series into a mega-franchise. The first part is on TV on Sunday and the differences to the new film, which is due to be released next year, are huge.

Dystopian Australia in the not too distant future: A brutal motorcycle gang, whose members call themselves Hell Jockeys, is murdering through the area and has taken control of the seemingly endless highways in the outback. The Main Force Patrol is trying to use all means possible to combat the gangs. And young Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) is one of the best patrol officers.
The Mad Max series will be even bigger next year
Mad Max was followed by two sequels in the 1980s. Then the series took a thirty-year break. It wasn’t until 2015 that the acclaimed Fury Road was released, which took the franchise to a whole new level. Director George Miller has directed every franchise entry to date.
The Fury Road prequel Furiosa is due in 2024 is coming to cinemas, which focuses on Charlize Theron’s character – albeit in a younger version, played by Anya Taylor Joy. The project has been in development since 2020 and the shoot is expected to cost $168 million. For comparison, Part 1 only cost $200,000.
