For the first time in 32 years, the death penalty will be carried out in Myanmar, says a spokesman for the military junta that rules the country. The last time this happened was in 1990.

Four people accused of terrorism by the junta have been sentenced to death by hanging. Among them are a well-known democracy activist and a former member of parliament who represented the party of the elected but deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The four have appealed and asked for a change of sentence, but the court rejected them, according to the spokesperson.
