After zombies were long seen as a slowly shambling threat in film history, the horror hit 28 Days Later significantly changed the image of the undead. With the 2002 genre film, director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland created a restless fight for survival in which zombies appear as a raging threat.
After the sequel 28 Weeks Later was released in 2007, there were always plans for another part of the zombie series. A few weeks ago there was news that Boyle and Garland were to create a new trilogy. There is now one for this concrete update that also affects the original star at the time.
28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy could return for zombie sequel
As the Hollywood Reporter reports, studio Sony has secured the rights to the new 28 Days Later sequels. Now there is no longer talk of a trilogy, but of two new parts. Both should have a budget in the 60 million range. Danny Boyle will only direct one sequel so far, while Alex Garland is writing the scripts for both films.
What’s also exciting is the detail that the original star at the time Cillian Murphy does on board as executive producer for the new films is. This means there is definitely the option for the current Oppenheimer star and Oscar favorite to star again in 28 Years Later. There is no official information about this yet.
