The first case of monkeypox was detected in Kosovo. Kosovo National Institute of Public Health announced that monkeypox virus was detected in a 30-year-old Kosovo citizen who recently returned from Africa.
In the statement made by the institution, “A Kosovo citizen, 30 years old and male, was admitted to the infection clinic on December 24 after returning from a country in West Africa. “The patient was admitted with complaints of high fever, chills, lesions on the face and hands, and itching.”
It was stated in the statement that the patient’s health condition was stable, and it was announced that the authorities had tracked down the patient’s family members and all individuals with whom he had been in contact and had taken precautions. The statement noted that patients generally experience mild or moderate symptoms that last for two to four weeks, and said, “Although the disease has been detected, there is no situation that could cause panic.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced at the end of last month that the monkeypox epidemic still continues to constitute an international public health emergency.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control announced last August that it was likely that more cases of external monkeypox would be seen in Europe, but that a permanent threat in Europe was low. According to central data, four cases were reported in Germany on December 15, and the first case of monkeypox was recorded in Belgium on December 18.
