Sci-fi worms are actually reserved for the Dune series, which has accompanied us in the cinema since the reboot of 2021. However, Bong Joon-Ho’s new film does not adhere to any rules and unleashes an entire army of nasty animal figures that could also come directly from King Kong.

Instead of a mysterious island, we find ourselves in Mickey 17 in the bleak corridors of a colonial spaceship, which is on the way to a more bleak planet: Nilfheim. Here a group of people hopes to find a new home. But the conquest of the icy world brings with it some hurdles.

Based on the Roman Mickey 7, Mickey 17 tells a crazy sci-fi adventure that causes a sensation, especially with its premise. The scary monster worms are actually not the most bizarre aspect of the film adaptation. Because from the main character we get 18 different versions.

The story revolves around the banged Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), who was banned on earth with some dodgy contemporaries. He is desperately looking for a way out of his predicament and reports as Expendable With space mission. Only too late does he notice what that really means.

Mickey has to perform life -threatening tasks that often lead to his death. As soon as he blesses the time, a new version of him is simply left out of the bioprinter. But then it happens that suddenly two Mickeys – No. 17 and No. 18 – are up to mischief and cause chaos. Because actually are Multiples forbidden.

At first glance, Mickey 17 is a large sci-fi epic that tells of the dangers of space and the uncertainty of a new world. However, Bong Joon-Ho does not (only) film Edward Ashton’s novel with the amazed look of a Spielberg blockbuster, but focuses primarily on the satirical aspects.

Get on a comprehensive dystopia that is more likely to score towards Terry Gilliam and takes several genres. From the sci-fi horror to the slapstick comedy to the political grotesque: somewhere, a love story even slumbering in this film, while Robert Pattinson shows himself from his most playful side.

With a look at Bongs so far, even the impression that Mickey 17 is the third part of a trilogy that he started with snow piercer and Okja. All films deal with the class struggle and the question of how living beings become a resource in capitalism, which is ruthlessly exploited.

Mickey 17 has been running since that March 6, 2025 in the German cinemas.
