Starting this evening, ProSieben is showing off one of the most elaborate series productions in recent years. House of the Dragon celebrates its free TV premiere. The successor series to Game of Thrones takes place around 200 years before the fantasy spectacle and prepares for a disastrous civil war in the first season. This time too it’s about the question of who will sit on the throne of the Seven Kingdoms, but you don’t need any prior knowledge of George RR Martin’s fantastic world.
In House of the Dragon, dragon riders rule over humans
In the fictional kingdom of Westeros there is mostly peace, which the ruling House Targaryen maintains with the help of its dragons. King Viserys Targaryen’s (Paddy Considine) only downfall is his Succession to the Iron Throne.
His first marriage resulted in a daughter, Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock and later Emma D’Arcy). However, there has never been a female ruler in the history of the empire and could turn other power factions against him.

Meanwhile, the free-spirited Rhaenyra slowly says goodbye to her childhood, which she spent with her unlikely friend Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey, later Olivia Cooke). Both are drawn into the intrigues at the royal court over the course of the seasonin which Rhaenyra’s uncle Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and Alicent’s father Otto (Rhys Ifans) have a stake.
The dragons are not neglected in the Game of Thrones successor
House of the Dragon consists of 10 episodes, each of which makes several major jumps in time. This is different from Game of Thrones. Another is the setting. Game of Thrones alternated between several kingdoms and continents, House of the Dragon takes place predominantly in King’s Landing (aka King’s Landing) and at the Targaryen headquarters Drachenstein or Dragonstone. If you liked Game of Thrones, you should be prepared for a somewhat more brittle, but no less exciting serieswhich recreates the atmosphere of its successful predecessor surprisingly well.
If you’ve never seen an episode of Game of Thrones, you’re in for a densely written fantasy drama with a focus on character development and courtly intrigue. The dragons are not neglected in the series either. You can read a spoiler-free first impression of House of the Dragon here.
