The extensive fires in Greece continue to rage for the ninth day in a row.

The largest fire devastates large areas in the Evros region near the border with Turkey. There, the residents of the Lefkimmi area have been ordered to leave their homes for safety reasons. Residents of the Kassitera area in the Rhodope region have also received the same order from the authorities.

The Euroregion’s deputy governor Dimitris Petrovic tells the TV channel ERT that it is a “very difficult situation” and that the fires have caused enormous damage.

The region has appealed for additional support to fight the flames.

– We don’t know whether or how we will manage to stop the progress of the fires, says Petrovic.

The fires in the region are the largest in the EU in 2023, and the second largest since 2000, according to the EU.

Another extensive fire rages in the Parnes mountain range near the capital Athens.
