While the forest fires that started in Alexandroupoli on Saturday, August 19, continued on its third day, the fires in Viotia region 120 kilometers north of Athens, Kavala, Eğriboz Island and the Rhodope region in Western Thrace could not be brought under control.
OVER 55 thousand acres became ash
Many residential units in the fire zones were evacuated for safety reasons. According to the data of the National Forest Fire Observatory, over 55,000 acres of forests burned in the first two days of the fire in Alexandroupoli. It is estimated that the area destroyed by the fire, which has not been extinguished yet, in Alexandroupoli in three days will exceed 75,000 acres.
The ashes of the forest fire in Alexandroupoli reached the city center of Alexandroupoli. The fire approached Dadia, where the Dadia Forest National Park, which is included in the natural environment protection network Natura 2000 within the borders of the European Union, is located.
WIND MAKES FLAME RESPONSE DIFFICULT
Settlements in areas where the fire broke out were evacuated as a precaution. In the fight against fire, the Greek Fire Service works in cooperation with the Police Service, the Armed Forces and volunteers. The wind, which reaches 70 kilometers per hour, complicates the fire extinguishing efforts.
FLAMES REACHED TURKISH VILLAGES
On the other hand, the fire affected the villages of Yassıköy, Narlıköy, Susurköy, Kozlu Dere, Çepelli and Müsellim, where Turks live heavily.
Some houses in Susurköy were damaged by the fire. Residents of the villages in question were evacuated for safety reasons.
