She is Finland’s most prominent biathlete.
But now Mari Eder is forced to end her career prematurely – due to heart problems.
– The last few weeks have been the worst for me, she says in a press release.

She made her WC debut back in 2007 and has since developed into one of Finland’s most high-profile and seasoned biathletes on the women’s side. In total, there have been four Winter Olympics and a whopping 350 World Cup competitions for the Finnish star skater Marie Eder.

Oaths leave

At her best, she was fourth in the World Ski Championships in 2017 and the Finn has won two World Cup races during her career. But unfortunately this was her very last season as a biathlete.

Now it is revealed that Eder suffered from heart problems and is therefore forced to retire as a 35-year-old. She had already prepared for her career to come to an end soon but the health announcement came suddenly.
— Unfortunately, I had heart problems at the end of the season, and it has been the worst for me in recent weeks. I haven’t been able to train, says the Finn in a statement to the International Biathlon Union, IBU.
– I usually take a few weeks after the season without structured training and just do things I want with my family. Now I had to change all plans.

Reveals new life

Mari Eder admits that there will be a big void in her life after 15 years at the World Cup and so many competitions over the years on both skis and roller skis.
– I will miss setting goals for my sports career and I will miss the motivation that came with setting goals, because my whole previous life revolved around trying to realize them, says the Finn in the press release.
