MeriAura, the owner of the Finnish ship that blocked the Kiel Canal in Germany, is currently investigating the damage caused by the shipwreck.
A Finnish ship and the lifting crane it was carrying collided with the structures of the Kiel canal and the Holtenau bridges in Germany early Wednesday morning. According to the German authorities, traffic on the Holtenau bridges and canal had to be suspended due to the accident. The Kiel Channel connects the North Sea to the Baltic Sea and is an important passage for ships.
The CEO of Turku-based MeriAura company is not responsible for the accident Bebbe Rosin don’t know yet.
– The ship has been moving into the channel and the cargo has hit the bridges. This has caused damage to the cargo and the ship. The structure of the bridges and the canal will be examined to see if they were also damaged in the collision.
The crew of M/S Mer was unharmed in the crash.
– The platform is currently being examined to determine the extent of the damage. The ship is safely docked in the Kiel canal at the moment, Rosin says.
The cause of the accident will be investigated in Germany.
– Based on the current information, we have no reason to suspect deficiencies in the crew’s actions or a fault in the ship’s technology. At the time of the accident, the pilotage was on, says Rosin.
The matter was corrected on 30.11. at 4:05 p.m. In Rosi’s quote, it was previously erroneously stated that the cargo had hit the pier. The ship’s cargo hit the canal bridges. In the audio of the story, Rosin also accidentally talks about the pier.
