The financial difficulties of Jalkapallo TPS forced a tough act

Miika Nuutinen, the head coach of Turku Palloseura, has terminated his contract with the Turku club, which lasted until the end of the 2026 season.

Playing in the First Football League Turku Football Association informs having fired his head coach Miika Nuutinen contract. Nuutinen and TPS reached a solution together.

– We have to heal our finances for next season, and in connection with the healing program, we also have to save on the current operating environment and the team budget. Due to financial realities, at least at this point in the year, we were not able to provide the operating environment that Miika wished for with certainty for the coming season, which is why we reached the solution we have now made in good agreement, FC TPS Turku Oy board chairman Group Peräaho commented in the club’s press release.

Nuutinen managed to coach TPS for one season. Last season, TPS was fourth in Finland’s second highest league level. Nuutinen’s contract was concluded until the end of the 2026 season.

– Sometimes unexpected changes occur in football. The decision was difficult, but in the current situation it was a sensible solution for both parties. I wish TPS all the best in the future and at the same time thank the club for this long season-long journey together, Nuutinen himself says in the TPS press release.

The traditional Turku club, which is more than a hundred years old, has suffered from financial difficulties in recent seasons. At the end of last season, the players of the club’s men’s representative team salaries were paid late. Also worked as the CEO of the club Petro Punna resigned from his job on its probationary period at the beginning of October, having started in its role only a month earlier.

– The work did not meet my expectations, so I terminated the employment during the trial period, Punna formulated in the Palloseura press release.

In the last five years, TPS has made a total of more than one million euros in losses. The club launched a share issue last summer.

The black and whites of Turku have last played in the Veikkausliiga in the 2020 season, at the end of which TPS was eliminated from the main league in the league qualifier against KTP.
