The Final Shape attracts over 300,000 Guardians on Steam – What do the first reviews say?

Destiny 2: The Final Shape was released on June 4, 2024 and – not surprisingly – had a pretty difficult start to life. MeinMMO shows you how the launch went and what the first reviews look like.

On June 4, 2024, The Final Shape, the hotly anticipated story conclusion of the saga of light and darkness, was released. We at MeinMMO kept you up to date with our ticker about the DLC’s launch difficulties.

Now, almost 24 hours later, the situation should have calmed down enough that it is worth taking a look at the first reviews.

Big rush of players at the start, but no record

How did the launch go? The Final Shape got off to a pretty difficult start. Apparently the servers couldn’t quite keep up with the influx of players: Many players received error messages saying the servers were offline, although others were able to get into the game without any problems.

Server problems are to be expected with launches like this, but they are likely to be particularly annoying with such an important DLC. After all, this is supposed to deliver the epic finale that has been worked towards for 10 years.

Despite all the issues, Destiny 2 reached an impressive 220,000 concurrent players on Steam minutes before the servers even came online, with numbers climbing in the hours that followed as more and more Guardians joined the game.

But then the next problems arose: error messages, especially CURRANT errors, prevented players from traveling in the game or starting or completing missions. Particularly insidious: Anyone who is kicked out of a mission due to a CURRANT error may miss important story cutscenes.

These problems probably led to Destiny 2 narrowly missing a new player record at launch: Shortly before the frequent occurrence of error messages, over 314,000 players were playing the game on Steam at the same time – as many as at the release of Lightfall. In the end, however, the new record was missed by almost 2,000 players.

While it is possible that Destiny 2 will be able to break the record by the weekend at the latest if everything works out, the difficulties are putting a damper on the hype surrounding the important expansion – this is also reflected in the first reviews.

Players mock: The Final Shame

What do the reviews look like? On Steam, The Final Shape is currently rated “Balanced” with 43% positive reviews from just over 1,300 ratings (as of June 5, 6:15 p.m.). The main game has also felt the frustration of players: as of June 5, there were only 211 positive reviews and 300 negative ones.

Many players vent their frustration in the reviews. Steam user 3than writes:

Best 40 bucks I’ve ever spent and the best two hours of my life… My favorite part was when Cayde said, “Destiny 2 servers are down.”

Another player cynically praises the “loading screen simulator” as a pre-order bonus for 50 euros. There are also numerous more or less creative puns surrounding the name of the DLC.

Other players, however, are calling for people to give The Final Shape a chance first: They praise the expansion and take the view that server problems at launch are normal, so there is no need to write a negative review straight away.

The following aspects are highlighted as particularly positive:

  • The Story
  • The voice acting
  • The new weapons
  • So it might be worth waiting a little longer before giving your final rating. But given the relatively small number of reviews compared to the number of players, it seems as though most of the old Destiny fans are doing just that. The overall rating could therefore change considerably in the coming days.

Things will get exciting again on Friday, June 7th, because that’s when the “Edge of Salvation” raid starts in The Final Shape and with it the race for the world first.
