The final Harry Potter film simply cuts out Harrys godson

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 airs tonight, on March 4, 2023 at 8:15 p.m. on Sat.1. Even if the omissions and changes in the last Harry Potter film are numerous for book connoisseurs, the final film in the series gives a bombastic finale. Only that Harry deprived of his godson Teddy Lupin in the 8th film is a small fly in the ointment. Because its existence would have made the farewell even more perfect.

Teddy Lupine is absent from the 8th Harry Potter film: This is his story in the book

Actually, the story of Teddy Lupine runs through the entire last part, but the 7th and 8th films of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows eliminates all of its moments from the last novel *. In summary, here’s what happens in JK Rowling’s original book:

Harry Potter and Lupin’s Farewell in Movie 8

  • From Tonks’ pregnancy Harry finds out because Lupine visits him at 12 Grimmauld Place. Worried that his son may have inherited his werewolf genes, the ex-professor is determined to join the trio’s Horcrux mission. But Harry sends the father-to-be home furious.
  • It wasn’t until months later that Harry and Remus reconciled: After the Birth of Edward Remus Lupin (nickname: Teddy) they meet at Bill and Fleur’s home, Shell Cottage, and Lupine asks Harry, the godfather to become his child. A post Harry accepts before Lupine and Tonks both fall at the Battle of Hogwarts.
  • 19 years later we not only meet Harry Potter’s family on platform 9 3/4, but also Teddy and learn a lot about Lupin’s offspring: As Harry’s godson, the orphan grew up with his grandmother Andromeda Tonks, but went in and out of the Potter house so much that Harry’s children almost see him as a brother. Teddy inherited his mother’s Metamorphmagus abilities. In the epilogue he makes out in Kings Cross station with his girlfriend Victoire Weasley, who is Bill and Fleur’s daughter.
  • In the Harry Potter films, Harry’s never-shown godchild only gets a contextless mention in Part 8: when the spirit of the slain Remus Lupine appears to Harry during his walk to meet Voldemort in the forest. Here Lupine says others would tell his son what his parents died for.

Why Lupin’s Son Would Have Made The Harry Potter Finale Even Better

Of course, a film adaptation never avoids making deletions from the original book. But of all the Harry Potter characters omitted from the books Teddy Lupin’s absence hurts for many reasons. Its inclusion would have made the Harry Potter conclusion even more rounded:

Harry Potter 7.2: Platform 9 3/4 without Teddy Lupin

For one thing, Harry Potter fans were hit hard by the deaths of Lupine and Tonks in the final installment, and a visible child as their legacy would have been a little comfort over the painful loss of the beloved parent figures can.

On the other hand, the orphan Teddy naturally also mirrors orphan Harry, only that in Teddy’s case it is shown that he fared better: Than touching circular conclusion of the orphan story in the book he lives an alternative life plan to Harry’s story of suffering with the Dursleys. And after Sirius, Harry is also allowed to fill the important godfather role.

Incidentally, Teddy Lupine was even cast for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 and was present at the filming: the actor Luke Newberry played Lupin’s son but fell victim to the cut. Evidence of its existence can only be found in behind-the-scenes photos:

It’s all the sadder that we never really got to see Harry’s godson as part of the Potter universe (not even in the bonus material). But who knows: If the rumors of a planned Harry Potter remake are confirmed, a remake might get a fresh start on Teddy Lupin.
