AMERICAN SNIPER. Directed by Clint Eastwood, American Sniper traces the life of American sniper Chris Kyle. When it was released, the film caused controversy.

The movie of Clint Eastwood has been accused by certain observers of glorifying the American army and in particular of glorifying the intervention in Iraq, by presenting American snipers as heroes. . It is especially the vision of Chris Kyle who killed more than 160 people, which is denounced. Several American media and personalities have taken the floor to denounce the point of view of the feature film, such as filmmaker Michael Moore (Fahrenheit 9/11, Bowling or Columbine…). The latter tweeted the following message when the film was released: “My uncle was killed by a sniper during the Second World War. We were taught that snipers were cowards, that they will shoot you in the back. Snipers are not heroes. And the invaders are worse.”
It must be said that American Sniper retraces the life of Chris Kyle, a sniper who would have succeeded in 160 shots during the war in Iraq. The character is controversial, among those who portray him as a hero, when others see him as a “hate-driven filled killer”. In his memoirs, released in 2012 (a few months before his death), Chris Kyle also wrote that his “only regret is not having killed more. I loved it.”
While American Sniper has received plenty of criticism, its defenders have also stepped up. The Daily Caller editorial pointed out that “Hollywood is predominantly left-leaning and has produced a series of anti-war and anti-military films that have been flops. In this world, American Sniper is an anomaly.” Despite this controversy, Clint Eastwood’s film however collected six Oscar nominations in 2015, but only left with the statuette for best sound editing.
