The festival of joy is celebrated in mourning in the Gaza Strip

Now the holiday of id al-adha is celebrated by Muslims around the world. Party with family and friends, good food and gifts and sweets for the children are included. But in the Gaza Strip there is hardly any food in the markets and even less money for gifts.

The Gaza Strip was poor even before the war, but last year you could still put up colorful decorations, give the children candy and presents, and buy meat or slaughter and share with others.

It was real ID. Everyone was happy, the children too, says Nadia Hamouda.

She has fled and lives in a tent in Deir al-Balah. Her daughter was killed in the war.

When we hear the call to prayer, we cry for those we have lost, for everything we have lost and what happened to us and how we used to live.

Abdelkarim Motawq used to work in the meat industry which flourished at this time of year. This year, his family can barely afford rice and beans.

It used to be a busy time. I earned money and bought food, clothes, nuts and meat for my children. But today there is nothing left.

Id al-Adha falls on the tenth day of the month of pilgrimage and is celebrated for four days beginning on the last day of the pilgrimage to Mecca. The holiday is called “the great feast”, distinct from the “little feast”, id al-fitr.
