– Germany is a deeply divided country. Yesterday, tens of thousands of people demonstrated against right-wing extremism. Today, the far-right AFD became the second largest party, says Jona Källgren.

As expected, conservative CDU/CSU wins big in the EU elections in Germany. This is according to the polling station survey that was presented on German television at 6 p.m.

The far-right party AFD is making strong progress in the election. This despite several scandals during the election campaign.

– The exciting thing was the fight for second place and according to the polling station survey, the far-right AFD will squeeze that place, says TV4’s foreign reporter Jona Källgren.

The big losers are the environmental party Alliance 90/The Greens.

– There was never any chance that they would reach the last election’s record, but they had still hoped to get over 14 percent, says Jona Källgren.

– It is mainly the young people in Germany who have left the Green Party. And among the young, AFD has grown strongly, he continues.

There has been a high turnout of around 66 percent in the country.

– Germany is a deeply divided country. Yesterday, tens of thousands of people demonstrated against right-wing extremism. Today, the far-right AFD became the second largest party. Largely with the help of a strong result in the former East Germany, says Källgren.

Germany has 96 seats in the EU Parliament.
