After the death of police chief Mats Löfving, sharp criticism has been directed at the investigation ordered by national police chief Anders Thornberg. It is described as unethical and the fact that it was the national police chief himself who gave the assignment is seen as remarkable.
Mats Löfving’s brother Jan tells TV4 Nyheterna that the family will pursue the case further.
– We have started a process where we will try to understand how legally this could proceed from now on, he says.
There is no doubt who the family holds responsible.
– I find it difficult to see anyone other than the person who started the investigation, formulated the mission for the investigation, allowed it to proceed and finally also sanctioned the way it was presented, and as a manager was not there for his employee. So it must be the national police chief himself, says Jan Löfving further.
GW: Gross libel
Leif GW Persson is strongly critical of the investigation into Mats Löfving. In Sunday’s Efter fem, he calls the investigator’s press conference “deeply offensive” and compares it to a “public execution”.
The investigator’s report has been removed from the police website on Sunday evening, reports say The Express. Before the report was taken down, Leif GW Persson managed to direct harsh criticism against it as well.
– There is an appendix included, which, as far as the description of Löfving is concerned, is closest to being described as gross slander of the deceased. It really can’t get more unfunny than this. I’ve never seen anything like it, I hope I never have to see it again. It seems that the top police leadership has completely lost its footing in some sense
Offers his help
The police professor offers the Löfving family his help in a possible legal process.
– If they need help to sue the state, I will gladly make sure that they get the necessary funds. Now a suit like this is normally pursued by the state itself, a liability suit. But suppose they don’t want to do it, then there are no obstacles to them doing it themselves.
TV4 Nyheterna has sought national police chief Anders Thornberg for a comment.
The police chief, Mats Löfving, was not squeamish when he appointed Linda Staaf as head of intelligence at the National Operative Department (Noa). In four decisions that Löfving made, the investigator Runar Viksten assesses that he was tough: When Linda Staaf was assigned a service weapon. When Löfving gave her a pay rise. When he approved her sideline as a writer. When Linda Staaf’s chief appointment was extended by Löfving. Viksten considers all the decisions to be correct in substance, but that they should not have been made by Löfving, because of differences. Löfving and Staaf had a relationship from 2015 until 2021, according to Viksten’s investigation.
