Interestingly, Tesla did not provide any details about this high-performance variant during the initial announcement of the refreshed Model 3. Looking at the features of the electric motor, the Long Range model will use the 3D3/3D7 electric motor combination, while the upcoming Performance model will have the 3D3/5D1 configuration. Tesla hasn’t provided details on the exact details of this new setup, but speculation suggests the 5D1 engine may include a carbon sleeve rotor to withstand high performance demands, similar to the one found in the Model S Plaid.
Now let’s talk power figures for a moment. The previous Model 3 Performance had an impressive 513 horsepower. Recently leaked specifications for the Chinese Model 3+ point to a dual-motor setup delivering 443 hp (331 kW), which is actually less than the 498 hp (366 kW) of the new Model 3 Long Range intended for Europe. The inclusion of the 5D1 engine hints at the possibility of a more powerful Model 3, bringing it closer to its larger Plaid siblings in terms of performance.
Weight plays a very important role when it comes to performance. The Model 3 Highland is reportedly about 63.5 kilograms (140 pounds) lighter than its predecessor. As any physics enthusiast will tell you, reduced weight usually means improved performance and improved range. Speaking of range, WLTP estimates show that the new Standard Range RWD model can cover an extra 2 miles on a single charge. Meanwhile, the Long Range AWD model sees a significant increase, going from 626km to 678km.

Availability of the updated Model 3 in the US remains speculative, as Tesla is currently accepting orders for the Highland variant in other global markets such as Australia and Europe.
