“I want us to have a tariff shield again next year […] targeted at the French who have the most difficulty taking the train”, announced this Thursday, December 7, the Minister for Transport. Clément Beaune initially plans a price freeze on the Ouigo, TGV “which young people take, people who have a little less means,” he believes.
A measure which responds to a spectacular increase in train fares in recent months. At the start of 2023, ticket prices increased by 5% on average, with peaks of 8% on some routes, according to the consumer association UFC Que Choisir.
In 2015, the average price per km for a TGV journey of less than an hour was 18 euro cents. In 2023, this price reaches 23 cents.
In the same logic aimed at encouraging the use of the train, Clément Beaune confirmed the launch “by next summer” of a Rail Pass, allowing unlimited TER and Intercités travel anywhere in France. It should be marketed at around 49 euros per month, like in Germany.
