On Wednesday evening, the announcement came that the US key interest rate will be raised by 75 basis points.
The interest rate increase was expected but at the same time surprisingly strong. It is an attempt to curb inflation in the country, which in June was the highest in forty years.
The American announcement will have major effects on the Swedish economy. That’s according to experts TV4 Nyheterna has spoken to who believe that more increases are now to be expected.
– Many Swedish companies, banks and loan institutions borrow money from the American interest rate market. Higher interest rates there spill over here to Sweden, says Johan Löf, senior economist at Handelsbanken.
The policy rate here in Sweden is now at 0.75 percent after the summer’s double increase.
