The expert: “S would not risk declaring NATO application dead”

Last minute The world stood up after Putins decision in

Morgan Johansson is allowed to remain as Minister of Justice, while Amineh Kakabaveh got what she wanted – S confirmed even before today’s vote on the no – confidence motion against the Minister that they stick to the agreement they made with her last autumn.

The question is whether an S-message to Kakabaveh risks damaging Sweden’s NATO application? The answer is no, says Aras Lindh, Turkey expert and analyst at the Foreign Policy Institute.

– The government is in the middle of negotiations with Turkey. I do not think that S would act in a way that risks declaring the NATO application dead, he says.

“Signal to hemopinion”

He sees S’s actions rather as a signal towards Turkey.

– The Social Democrats’ confirmation should rather be seen as a signal to a Swedish hemopinion that they do not give in to demands from Turkey in any way, he tells SVT.

At the same time, it should be remembered that it is not far to the next election, which means that the agreement with Kakabaveh in principle loses importance after the election, he says.

Can run out of time

Per Ekman, a doctoral student in political science, partly agrees, but believes that the outcome between the government and the opposition can slow down the NATO process.

– Turkey wants a negotiated solution to get something out of Sweden’s NATO process. If Sweden does not succeed in reaching an agreement with Turkey at the NATO summit at the end of June, then the application may be delayed – even after the election, he says.
