The expansion offers more of the same, but better

Last minute The world stood up after Putins decision in

Outriders Worldslayer, the first major expansion for the brutal loot shooter, will be released on June 30th. MeinMMO author Marko Jevtic was allowed to play it and had a lot of fun. But there is a big catch.

Of all the loot shooters out there, Outriders is my favorite. It feels like it was made for me: whether it’s story or gameplay, this game is brutal, aggressive and uncompromising through and through.

Not only are the abilities of each class a firework, they really do feel as powerful as the story makes them out to be.

Now I’ve already been allowed to play Outriders Worldslayer, and I wasn’t disappointed. Everything I liked about the original game is here too. Just more of it, and better. A bland aftertaste remains: the price of 40 €.

Outriders Worldslayer Reveal Spotlight

Outriders Worldslayer gives you more reasons to play it as usual

The Worldslayer expansion wants to convince you with the following innovations:

  • The story campaign continues with a new villain: the fearsome commander Ereshkigal.
  • The story content should offer between 4 and 10 hours of playtime, plus the new endgame.
  • The new “Apocalypse Items” give legendary and epic loot another mod slot, making these weapons and armor even more powerful.
  • There are 2 new upgrade paths for your class:
  • In the Pax skill tree you can invest a total of 5 points in insanely powerful class improvements.
  • The progression tree works like the badass ranks in Borderlands – for each level after the max level 30 you can improve individual stats minimally.
  • Apocalypse Tiers are the new difficulty system replacing World Tiers. These go up to rank 40 and can be leveled up with any type of content.
  • In a new endgame activity, you can work your way through various challenges and grind to your desired loot. The structure with branching paths that lead to bosses is a bit reminiscent of roguelites like Hades. This endgame can hardly be done solo, it is clearly intended for teams of 3.
  • There are many new enemy types and a lot of new loot.
  • Unfortunately, those who were hoping for new classes or abilities will be disappointed in this expansion. Because the basic motto at Worldslayer clearly goes in one direction: the usual, but better.

Basically, the expansion doesn’t change that much in Outriders, but everything plays more smoothly.

Outriders has always been a game centered around the incredible power fantasy. As a cold-blooded quasi-god in a broken world, all that matters is doing more damage than any other creature in play.

Outriders Returns After A Tough Year 1 With Big DLC Worldslayer – Who’s Worth It For?

Whoever plays the most aggressively lives the longest thanks to self-healing through damage. That was a recipe for success a year ago, and it still is. And that’s exactly what the expansion takes to the extreme, thanks to the new upgrade options in the game.

The Apocalypse gear and the new upgrade paths perfectly sum up what you can expect from the Worldslayer expansion. You don’t really get fundamentally new toys of destruction, but you can tear apart even more awesome things with your favorite ones.

The new enemy types are also to be commended here. In the first hours of the game you fight against several enemies who want to make you hell in close combat with fat axes or knives. These villains are not only visually reminiscent of enemies from Diablo or Elden Ring, you also have to cleverly dodge their attacks to crack them, just like in these games.

My personal highlight in the first few hours of play was therefore the mission in a wrecked fishing village, which, with the horror atmosphere and scary stories about the vengeful ghost of a fisherman, is atmospherically reminiscent of the last level of the Bloodborne DLC.

There wasn’t anything quite like it in the base game, but it fits in well with the already brutal and nihilistic world of Outriders.

Worldslayer offers good content at a steep price

The innovations in Outriders Worldslayer are very good, even if they don’t even try to reinvent the wheel. Along with the New Horizons update, the loot grind is now more fun and impactful than ever.

When I found two pieces of apocalyptic armor with my Technomancer, which together already gave me four powerful mods for my minigun, the power trip after an hour in the expansion was already bigger than in the endgame of the base game.

The developers of People Can Fly obviously understand what’s fun about their loot shooter: big magazines, bigger explosions, gigantic damage numbers. Those who like it will be well served with Worldslayer.

Especially in comparison to the loot shooter king Destiny 2, Outriders plays much faster, more aggressively and more brutally. There is no PvP in Worldslayer either, but if you want to destroy better and better in PvE, you should have a lot of fun with Outriders in 2022.

Worldslayer content seamlessly continues the story of the base game. So you need to have reached the Outriders endgame to start Worldslayer. You have two options for this:

  • You can take your old max level character to the new campaign and start the new campaign from your camp.
  • You can create as many new characters as you want, which are equal to level 30 and start directly with the expansion.
  • So you can get started right away as a newcomer and veteran if you want. Trying out new classes is now easier than ever.

However, the price is disappointing. Worldslayer costs €39.99 as an upgrade for the base game, and the two together without discounts cost around €80. For big fans or very interested beginners, this cost may still be justifiable. But unless you’re absolutely convinced beforehand that you really want to play Worldslayer, then this expansion doesn’t offer enough really new things to be convincing.

    Per

  • Lots of new content improves the base game
  • More ways to perfect your builds
  • New enemies and regions are varied and fun
  • You can start directly in the extension
  • cons

  • No new classes or skills
  • Doesn’t really play any differently
  • Comparatively steep price
  • In the first impression, Outriders Worldslayer is exactly what I wanted from the expansion: the intensive, aggressive gameplay of the loot shooter is further rounded off and polished with new challenges, better loot and higher stats.

As a fan, that’s enough for me. Because in hardly any PvE game do I have so much fun playing the same things over and over again as in Outriders. I still think it’s awesome that every class heals itself through hyper-aggressive gameplay. So for me, Worldslayer is exactly what it officially is: a good addition to what I already love.

But it’s not a reinvention of the game. Outriders is still Outriders, now there’s just more of it. If, like me, you loved the previous content and don’t necessarily need a new class or something, you can grab this without hesitation. However, if you have never warmed to 100% with Outriders, you will probably find few new reasons to learn to love the game.

Especially for the comparatively steep 40 € that the expansion costs, I can currently recommend Worldslayer mainly to Outriders veterans or very interested newcomers.
