The excavation of the synagogue of Aguerd opens up “perspectives for the Judeo-Moroccan heritage”


The Aguerd synagogue is located in the town of Tamanart (photo), in the Moroccan region of Souss-Massa.

For four days, from November 21 to 25, 2021, an international team made a first in Morocco. A joint Moroccan-Israeli archaeological excavation took place on the site of the Aguerd synagogue, in the Souss-Massa region. Lecturer and researcher at the Sorbonne in the Mediations laboratory, David Goeury established a stakeholder mobilization protocol for these excavations, led by researchers from the National Institute of Archaeological and Heritage Sciences of Rabat (Insap), in Morocco and Ben-Gurion University in the Negev, in Israel.
