Clashes broke out between cartel members and security forces in the early hours of the morning in the city of Nuevo Laredo in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. In the city, located on the border of the US state of Texas, cartel members set fire to many vehicles and closed the roads to traffic. While the clashes in many parts of the city caused panic among the people, the local government announced that the schools were closed for security reasons and the public transportation service was stopped. The US Consulate in the city, on the other hand, announced that all services were suspended and appointments were canceled due to the security problem, and called for its staff to seek shelter in a safe place.
CONFLICT BROKEN DUE TO CARTEL LEADER ARRESTED
In a statement, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated that the attacks took place due to the arrest of a cartel leader operating in the city, and that the captured leader was responsible for many violent incidents that took place in the city of Nuevo Laredo in recent days.
Authorities reported that after the clashes that lasted more than 2 hours, security was restored in the city of Nuevo Laredo with the support of the Mexican army. While no official statement has been made about whether there were any casualties or injuries in the clashes, it was reported that the cartel leader, known as “Comandante Negrolo”, was taken to the capital, Mexico City.
