The EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borell: The war will be decided this spring

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borell puts pressure on the US to act in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
According to him, the war will move towards a decision already this year, reports Reuters.
– Whatever has to be done, it has to be done quickly, he told the media on Thursday.

On Thursday, the EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borell called a meeting in Washington. His message was clear: It is urgent to act in the war against Ukraine.

– We have to hurry. We need to increase our support, do more and faster, he said when he met the media after the meeting.

He added that several analysts expect a Russian offensive already this summer.

– The coming months will be decisive.

“Ukraine cannot wait”

Josep Borell also put pressure on the US to act urgently. Several aid proposals put forward by US President Joe Biden have been stopped in the preamble. Donald Trump, who is the clear winner in the Republican primaries, has also said that he wants to end continued aid to Ukraine.

But Josep Borell emphasizes that support from the outside world is crucial for Ukraine’s future.

– Ukraine cannot wait for the results of the next American election, he said.

Mike Johnson, the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives and a Trump ally, has so far blocked the vote on a $60 billion aid package for Ukraine.

Scholtz and Macron meet in Berlin

During Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholtz will receive French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. There, a lightning meeting will be held about further support from Europe.

The frosty relationship between Scholz and Macron has previously been reported. It is based, among other things, on the EU’s defense strategy, where there are differences of opinion between the two leaders.
