The EU’s Borrell demands an investigation into the attack on the Red Cross facilities in Gaza | News in brief

Borrell reminds that humanitarian organizations must be able to operate safely in Gaza.

EU foreign policy high representative Josep Borrell calls for an independent investigation into the attack on the ICRC offices of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza. Borrell wrote on Saturday message service in Xthat the EU condemns the attack that damaged the offices of the aid organization and claimed more than 20 lives.

Borrell insists that the perpetrators must be held accountable for the attack. He reminded that protecting civilians is an obligation enshrined in the Geneva Conventions and that the ICRC must be able to operate safely in Gaza. The organization said earlier that at least 22 people were killed in the strike that damaged its Gaza facilities near Rafah. The shells fell just meters away from the organization’s office and living quarters, around which hundreds of civilians live in tents.

Commenting on the attack on the premises of the Red Cross, the spokesperson of the Israeli Armed Forces did not admit Israel’s part in the attack, but said that the incident would be investigated.
