Step by step, the EU’s much talked about asylum and migration pact is now moving towards its completion. Since the EU countries gave the thumbs up at the ambassadorial level last week, the go-ahead came on Wednesday also from the EU Parliament’s main responsible committee, Libe.
“Important step towards a more functioning and controlled European migration policy”, writes the Swedish member Tomas Tobé (M) on X after the committee voted yes with 41 votes to 20.
The pact is supported above all by the large center groups in the EU – Christian Democrats, Social Democrats and Liberals – while the far right, the left and the Greens are against it.
“Only those without shame in their bodies can be proud of a migration settlement that undermines human rights and locks up young children on the run,” greets Alice Bah Kuhnke (MP), for example, via SMS to TT.
In April, the pact is expected to receive its final approval by the entire EU Parliament and the Council of Ministers.
