Concern and questions continue to mount around the world about the mpox epidemic after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared its highest international alert level on 14 August, due to the sharp increase in cases linked to this epidemic in Central Africa. While the first cases outside Africa were detected in Sweden and Pakistan this week, it is now the turn of the ECDC, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, to sound the alarm. The European Union agency is urging EU and European Economic Area countries to prepare for an increase in mpox cases.
