The compromise proposal was voted through by 439 votes to 157. Two weeks ago, the same vote in minor ended after the responsible German member Peter Liese failed to anchor all minor agreements in advance. The Social Democratic party group then chose to vote down the whole package, which was followed by mutually bitter words between the various party groups.
Last week, however, Social Democrats, Christian Democrats Conservatives and Liberals agreed on a new line, which means, among other things, that the free allocation of emission rights will be phased out by 2032, instead of 2034.
In addition, the reduction in the number of emission rights will take place according to a step-by-step model: by 4.4 per cent from 2024, 4.5 per cent from 2026 and 4.6 per cent from 2029.
– Finally we got to it. We take a big step for the climate, but also protect jobs, said Peter Liese.
Now tough negotiations with the member states await, according to TT.
Carbon dioxide tariff and social climate fund
In addition to changes in emissions trading, there is also a vote on the introduction of a carbon dioxide tariff and a social climate fund – for those households that have high transport costs or do not have access to necessary energy services.
