A week after its weakening by the European Parliament, the law against imported deforestation is now supported by the member states of the European Union. The 27 agreed to maintain the text in its initial version. This emblematic project of the environmental action carried out by the previous mandate aims to prohibit in the Union the marketing of products resulting from deforestation.

The life of the European project to combat deforestation is definitely very turbulent. While it was to apply at the end of the year, many voices, in Europe and elsewhere, were calling for its postponement. The text is in fact described by its detractors as a gas factory: importers of goods on the old continent must prove that their products and those of their suppliers do not come from deforestation. Under the pressure of Brazilthe United States and even Germany, the European Commission had proposed to postpone its entry into force by one year, from December 30, 2024 to December 30, 2025.
Alliance between the right and the far right
An agreement to this effect had been reached, but last Thursday, during the vote in Parliament to ratify it, the conservatives allied themselves with the far right to weaken the project. The European Parliament had thus voted to create a new category of countries considered “risk-free”, and which would be exempt from certain obligations of this law, reports AFP

This Wednesday, November 20, a week later, EU Member States, with the notable exception ofItalyhave all come to the aid of the project and are opposed to a discounted version. They want to stick to the one-year postponement, to December 30, 2025, of the entry into force of this European regulation and not to retouch the substance of the text.
So here we go again, with a new visit to the European Parliament which will have to decide a second time, probably in mid-December. The future of the law still remains very unclear, even though it is one of the most important texts of theEuropean Union in environmental matters.
