On Thursday, the European Parliament approved a resolution recognizing the Soviet Union’s enforced famine in Ukraine in 1932-1933 as genocide. Millions of Ukrainians died from the mass genocide, which was named Holodomor and which affected the country as a result of a harsh policy of collectivization by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

In a statement, the EU writes that the famine was “caused by a deliberate policy of the Soviet regime, as a genocide against the Ukrainian people”. EU lawmakers are calling on all countries and international organizations that have not yet recognized the Holodomor as a genocide to do so.

Parliament also condemns “the terrible Russian crimes that are once again being perpetrated against the Ukrainian people, such as the targeted destruction of Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure over the winter.”
