The EU’s arms aid committee and the heads of government of the EU countries decided today to support Ukraine’s armed forces and industry with the proceeds of funds frozen from Russia.
of the EU High Representative for External Relations by Josep Borrell according to the first tranche of 1.4 billion euros will probably be available next week. The money is channeled to Ukraine through the Ukrainian Support Foundation (UAF).
As usual when it comes to supporting Ukraine, Hungary did not agree with other EU countries on whether the proceeds of Russian funds can be used to arm Ukraine.
However, other EU countries introduced a new overtaking lane.
Hungary had previously abstained from the vote regarding the establishment of the Ukraine Aid Foundation included in the European Peace Fund. Based on this, the European Council interpreted that Hungary’s veto right does not need to be taken into account in the decision to be made now.
It is especially about the fact that the funds going to Ukraine are not from the pockets of EU taxpayers, but from the proceeds of Russian funds frozen in the Euroclear financial center, EU authorities commented according to Politico.
In general, the funds of the UAF Foundation have been diverted as repayments to the countries that bought weapons for Ukraine. Now the proceeds of Russian funds are used directly for defense and industrial material purchases.
The Hungarians were not satisfied with the other EU leaders’ taunting.
– This is a clear red line, such a shameless violation of European rules has not been seen before, the Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó comment on the decision on Facebook.
According to Szijjártó, Hungary’s EU legal team is now looking for possible ways that “Hungary would get justice”.
