The former Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas, is hosting the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting for the first time today.
The EU, Turkey, the United States, the Arab countries and Syria’s neighboring countries all agree on how to approach the new regime in Syria, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas says.
Today, Kallas is hosting the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting for the first time.
An EU representative has traveled to Damascus to talk with the new Syrian authorities. His task is to find out how the organization that seized power in Syria plans to rule the country.
– We support Syrian citizens in transition, as we did [Bašar] of al-Assad during the reign of terror, says Kallas.
The situation in the Middle East and Gaza was also discussed in the council. The EU still supports the ceasefire and the two-state model solution for Israel and the Palestinian territories.
All the necessary support to be given to Ukraine
Another big topic of discussion at today’s meeting was Ukraine. According to Kallas, the EU is already trying to make it difficult for Russia to wage war in Ukraine. We published the 15th sanctions package, which targets the Russian shadow navy, the North Korean authorities and, for the first time, also Chinese drone manufacturing companies.
– Our message is very clear. You can’t instigate a war in Europe and get away with it without consequences.
Kallas says that supporting Ukraine must be continued militarily, as it improves the country’s position at the negotiating table as well.
– The fall of the Syrian regime showed that Russia is weak and not [Vladimir] To Putin can be trusted.
Kallas admits that the situation in Ukraine at the front is difficult. The country needs more ammunition and anti-aircraft systems.
– Ukraine must be given everything it needs to win the war.
“Georgians have the right to decide their own future”
The third topic in the day’s discussion was the situation in Georgia.
According to Kallas, the situation of Georgian citizens is not improving.
– In a democratic country, the government would not limit the activities of the opposition and the free media.
As a result of the development, contact with Georgia has been reduced and funding of the country’s administration has been suspended in the EU.
– We will continue to support the citizens of Georgia in the future. Instead of the administration, the aid money will once again go to the country’s non-governmental organizations and independent media.
Just like with Syrians, Georgians also have the right to decide their own future.
