The EU’s permanent Council President Charles Michel is standing for election to the EU Parliament this spring and will step down as Council President in July if he is elected, Belgian De Standaard reports.
– I have decided to stand in the EU elections in 2024, says Michel in an interview with the newspaper on Saturday.
If he is elected, the member states need to appoint a successor at the end of June or at the beginning of July, he says.
Michel, former prime minister of Belgium, belongs to the liberal Reform Movement (MR) party and is appointed as council chairman until 30 November this year. He assumed the position in December 2019.
The EU elections are held on 6–9 June.
