With melting ice in the Arctic, sea levels will rise. Which risks increasing erosion.
In Sweden, Löderup beach in Skåne is the most vulnerable place to erosion, and there they want to see the state take greater responsibility in the fight against erosion damage. In Löderup’s beach, they are already working on a document to be submitted to the state to ensure that the property owners and the municipalities no longer have to stand alone.
– If we have large forest fires, the state intervenes, but we don’t find that cohesion when it comes to erosion problems, says Rolf Jonsson, chairman Löderup strandbad samfällighetsförening.
A few hundred meters from this beach, sand is unloaded and packed to reduce damage from erosion along the coastline. The sand must be eaten up by the sea, shallower shorelines create a kind of buffer that dampens the energy of the waves and, in turn, erosion. And it is above all in southern and southwestern Scania that this causes problems. And it will get worse in the future.
