A final season which proves to be particularly emotionally intense, since the writers of The Good Doctor have chosen to make a key character of the series disappear, in a tragic way. But Glassman’s death isn’t the only drama that befalls Shaun in the final season of The Good Doctor. Her friend and former colleague Claire, played by Antonia Thomas, returns after several seasons of absence. And it is as a patient that she returns, revealing that she has breast cancer. “It’s another hard blow for Shaun to see someone he loves so much suffering,” explained Freddie Highmore, Shaun’s interpreter. “He will do everything to save her.” Unfortunately, despite the experimental treatment that Shaun puts in place, Claire will lose her arm in this season, although her life will be saved.
The 10th and final episode of this season 7 of The Good Doctor is undoubtedly the climax of this tragic scenario. Doctor Glassman chooses to take advantage of his last moments while Claire, plunged into an artificial coma, is at her worst. Shaun refuses to abandon his colleagues and desperately searches for solutions. He considers a risky experimental treatment for his sister, while amputation becomes an option of last resort. In an unexpected move, the ailing doctor steps in to protect the young resident’s career, but ultimately succumbs.
“A terrible shock for Shaun”
“It’s a terrible shock for Shaun,” Freddie Highmore told the press on the sidelines of the broadcast of The Good Doctor season 7. “Glassman is the one who always supported him, who believed in him when no one else did. Losing him is going to be a huge ordeal.” The scenes between Shaun and Glassman are therefore more than poignant, while the young surgeon will have to accept letting go of the one he considers a father. “We shot very moving sequences with heartbreaking goodbyes,” Richard Schiff also revealed.
Faced with these terrible ordeals, Shaun can count on the unwavering support of his wife Lea and their children. “It’s what allows her to hold on, to continue moving forward despite the grief,” analyzes Paige Spara, who has played Lea from the start. The final episodes show how Shaun manages to overcome these tragedies, including creating a foundation in Glassman’s name to help doctors with autism spectrum disorders like him.
The finale of The Good Doctorbroadcast in May 2024 in the United States, jumps back in time several years. We discover a fulfilled Shaun, now head of surgery, surrounded by his family and friends. “It was important for us to show that despite hardships, life goes on and that we can find happiness,” said David Shore, the creator of the series. “We wanted a hopeful ending.” The final shot, which shows Shaun leaving the hospital with Lea and their children, is a nice homage to the very first episode.
For fans, seeing the series end is inevitably heartbreaking, especially with the tragic events of this final season. Why did Antonia Thomas (Claire) leave the series?
