We’ve known since August: House of the Dragon will definitely be with us for a few more years. But the spin-off cannot keep up with the scope of the mother series, Game of Thrones. Where the film adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire is on an impressive eight seasons came, House of the Dragon only achieves half of it.

Two seasons of House of the Dragon have already been released. Two more are being planned. After the fourth round it’s over. However, all fans who fear that we will have to say goodbye to Westeros forever can be given the all-clear. HBO is sticking with the popular fantasy brand.

Our sister site AdoroCinema has looked into the future of GoT and comes to the point: The Expansion of the franchise has just begun. Although House of the Dragon is far from becoming a pop culture milestone like Game of Thrones, there are still plenty of spin-offs to come.

All Game of Thrones projects that are definitely coming

  • House of the Dragon Season 3 & 4 continue the story about House Targaryen. The series was created by Ryan Condal (Rampage) and Game of Thrones mastermind George RR Martin. The novel Fire & Blood, which was also written by Martin, serves as a model.
  • A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms revolves around Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg. The characters come from Martin’s novella Tales of Dunk and Egg. Peter Claffey (Vikings: Valhalla) and Dexter Sol Ansell (The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) star. The series was created by Martin and Ira Parker (Better Things). The first season includes a total of six episodes.

    • All Game of Thrones projects in development

  • Ten Thousand Shipsset around 1,000 years before Game of Thrones, is being written by Pulitzer Prize winner Eboni Booth (Primary Trust) after Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential) left the project. Although it seemed like the series wasn’t coming, Martin recently confirmed that Ten Thousand Ships is still in development.
  • Aegon’s Conquest has been in development since 2023 and is supervised by Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II). The story is connected to House of the Dragon, but begins a little earlier. After the fall of Old Valyria, we learn of Aegon’s conquest of Westeros. Individual passages from Fire & Blood are said to be the inspiration for the project.
  • The Sea Snake aka Nine Voyages also draws on additional information mentioned in Fire & Blood. The project went into development in 2021, but so far it has not made much progress. However, the backstory of the Sea Snake (played by Steve Toussaint in House of the Dragon) will not appear in live-action form, but rather as an animated series.
  • The Golden Empire first officially appeared in a blog post by Martin in 2022. The central setting of the spin-off is Yi Ti, a region in the far east of Essos. Just like The Sea Snake, this is a Game of Thrones series that is supposed to conquer home screens in animated images. Concrete updates on the project are also few and far between.

    • There was also talk of some kind of continuation of the main series, in which Kit Harington would return as Jon Snow. In the meantime but the project is on hold. As the fate of Ten Thousand Ships shows, there is still a chance that HBO will bring back dead ideas with new creative input.

    What definitely won’t be returning is the Bloodmoon series starring Naomi Watts. Despite a $30 million pilot episode, HBO decided against ordering the full series and blocked the footage in the poison cabinet. There are numerous other spin-off approaches for this purpose.

    When we dig into the depths of the rumor mill, keywords like Robert’s Rebellion and Flea Bottoma series about the seedy streets of King’s Landing. Meanwhile, fans are still dreaming of a spin-off series with Arya. In other words, HBO can continue to run Game of Thrones for a very long time.

    When does House of the Dragon Season 3 start?

    House of the Dragon season 3 hits expected on HBO in 2026 a. If the series sticks to the current two-year rhythm, that would mean that the fourth season will not air until 2028. But we don’t have to wait too long for GoT supplies. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms starts in 2025.
