The emergency room in Östersund mistook a stroke for intoxication – incident reported to IVO

When the woman woke up on the afternoon of Midsummer’s Day, she was unsteady, dizzy and had difficulty speaking. During the day she fell and hit her head. When she had not gotten better in the evening, relatives called an ambulance.

Inside the emergency department, she does not respond to calls and is judged to be under the influence of alcohol.

It wasn’t until three hours after the woman arrived at the emergency room that her brain was x-rayed and a stroke on the cerebellum was discovered. For various reasons, it took until 7 o’clock the following morning before the woman was flown to Umeå for emergency surgery.

The incident has been reported to the Inspectorate for Care and Care, IVO.
