Eurovision week in Malmö is in full swing and thousands of fans have flocked to the city.
At the same time, the emergency room at Scania University Hospital in Malmö is getting ready for a higher influx of patients.
– We expect that there will be more patients, especially Thursday and Saturday in connection with the big events in town, says Andreas Gyldenkærne, section manager at the emergency department.
On Thursday, the second semi-final will be held, where Israel, among others, will participate, and on Saturday it is time for the final.
In the emergency department at the University Hospital, height has been increased for a higher influx of patients, something Läkartidningen was the first to report on. So far, it is only a single patient more than usual. Nevertheless, extra doctors, nurses and assistant nurses have been called in for a number of different shifts.
– In collaboration with the city of Malmö and the police, we have looked at when we can expect an increased load and have set the staffing accordingly, says Andreas Gyldenkærne, section manager at the emergency department.
“Folk Festival”
It is mainly minor injuries that are expected.
– We expect that there will be a folk festival in town. People are out dancing, having fun and maybe falling.
– There will be a few who have had too much alcohol. Nothing unusual, continues the section manager.
According to him, however, people are used to larger arrangements at the emergency department.
– Eurovision is of course a little bigger and takes place here all week, so it’s a little longer than usual.
But otherwise there is no direct difference, he says.
Have contingency plans
Ahead of Eurovision, security preparations have gone into high gear, something TV4 Nyheterna has previously reported on. Even in the emergency department, people are prepared in case of a possible crisis or special event.
– We have contingency plans for various scenarios. We have had that for a long time, says Andreas Gyldenkærne.
– It is clear that the staff are aware that there is a lot going on in Malmö
this week, but are worried they are not. We have prepared as best we can and so far it has gone pretty well.
