The election of the ecologist Jérémie Iordanoff as vice-president of the Assembly shakes the Macronie-LR alliance

In the midst of examining a particularly difficult finance bill, new cracks have appeared within the fragile coalition between the Macronists and the right. Tuesday October 22, the “ common base » did not unite behind the candidate Les Républicains for the election of a vice-presidency of the Assembly, thus allowing the candidate of the New Popular Front, the ecologist Jérémie Iordanoff, to be elected. This situation seems to reflect a form of revenge within the presidential camp.

The ecologist Jérémie Iordanoff was elected vice-president of the Assembly on Tuesday, defeating LR candidate Virginie Duby-Muller, who suffered from the divisions of the “common base” bringing together LR and the Macronists in support of the government. A victory which illustrates the divisions between the camp of Emmanuel Macron, led by Gabriel Attal, and the right led by Laurent Wauquiez (LR), precarious “common base” of the government of Michel Barnier.

Already last week, another election had weakened the coalition, but the dynamic was reversed. For the presidency of a commission, LR deputies abstained, thus allowing a rebellious deputy to win against a MoDem candidate, an ally of the Macronists. This reversal caused strong discontent among centrists. “ It put a number of people on edge. I asked my deputies to ensure that it is not the NFP which obtains the seat. After, these are the secrets of the voting booth”, explains Marc Fesneau, the head of MoDem.

Within the presidential party, Gabriel Attalvery angry last week against the leader of LR Laurent Wauquiez, nevertheless insisted on electing the LR candidate. However, the dozen text messages sent to his troops were not enough. During the vote, Duby-Muller obtained 161 votes against 175 for the environmentalist deputy Jérémie Iordanoff, who benefited from the mobilization of his camp. On the right, the discontent is palpable. “ With allies like that, you don’t need enemies, as they say. This is an extra red flag, because it’s not the first time this has happened, and it’s starting to sting slightly,” regrets MP Philippe Gosselin.

Of the “ hiccups in the contract » between LR and macronists

This is the paradox of this Assembly resulting from a dissolution decided one June evening at the Élysée: this “ base », ranging from the supports ofEmmanuel Macron – Renaissance, MoDem, Horizons – to the Republicans (LR), via part of the centrist Liot group, was formed to ensure the re-election to the perch of the Macronist Yaël Braun-Pivet and serve as a basis for the nomination to Matignon of Michel Barnier.

But since then, there has been great disagreement over the distribution of positions in the Assembly, the attitude towards the Barnier government or still reviewing the budget. A coalition without a coalition contract whose fragility appears vote after vote at the Palais-Bourbon, while the examination of the budget has begun, to which all observers promise adoption by 49.3.

But there is no question of defending Emmanuel Macron’s record. The LR group, taken over by Laurent Wauquiezconsiders himself wronged since July, now considering himself under-represented in important positions in the Assembly. And he even accuses Gabriel Attal and the Macronists of having “ deal with the RN “.

The left rejoices

For its part, the left is jubilant. The leader of the Insoumis, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, congratulated Mr. Iordanoff on Phony team, bogus strategy, Macron and Barnier are useless nuisances,” he tackled. “ This victory is first and foremost that of the union of the New Popular Front. This bloc of support for Michel Barnier has no programmatic coherence and no solidarity in important moments,” greeted the president of the environmental group, Cyrielle Chatelain.

The beneficiary of this situation is therefore Jérémie Iordanoff, who, as new vice-president, did not fail to attack the coalition in power. “ They agreed, they formed a coalition, but not on a program. So obviously there’s tension, there’s friction, and they don’t know where they’re going. Which is actually very worrying. »

Thanks to these tensions now visible to all, the left is strengthening its position within the office of the Assembly, now with three of the six vice-presidencies.
