The editor -in -chief of Joakim Medin: “He sews no dolls”

Swedish journalist Joakim Medin was on his way to Turkey to monitor developments in the country. But when he landed in Istanbul on Thursday, he was arrested.

Today’s ETC’s editor -in -chief Andreas Gustavsson has not heard anything from Medin since that day.

– He had briefly inform me that he was called in for a hearing. Since then I have not heard anything from him until now through agents, he says and continues:

– He has said that he is doing well in the circumstances. He has been interrogated, and has had to stand in a zoom call before the judge. He does not formally know what he is accused of or whether he will formally be accused of something.

Data: Must have been involved in terrorist organization

Gustavsson says that Medin met a lawyer, who is appointed by his closest family, and who should have good knowledge of the Turkish legal system.

– The lawyer has met him in prison Maltepe where he sits alone in a cell. I have received information that he has been wanted. Unclear why.

According to information in Turkish media, Joakim Medin is accused of connection to militant movements, Gustavsson says. He is also one of 15 suspects in an investigation that began after a doll representing Erdogan was hung outside Stockholm City Hall in 2023, according to Reuters who refers to Turkish authorities.

There is also information that Joakim Medin must have been involved in a terrorist organization.

– Joakim, as a journalist, has reported from Turkey many times, some of those times on the Kurdish issue. He has good accumulated sources within the Kurdish movement. What I think I find out is that you extrapolate the journalistic work for PKK coupling. I think it is PKK you are looking for here, but I can only speculate on it and say that it is not true.

He also emphasizes that Joakim Medin has not insulted anyone and he is not in any militant organization.

-He has never been and this Erdogan doll is almost too absurd to comment. We guarded it as a daily newspaper, he does not sew dolls.

“I want Joakim to come home”

Now Andreas Gustavsson hopes that the government has Joakim’s homecoming high on the priority list.

– I want Joakim to come home, that’s my only priority now. Then maybe you can speak more clearly when Joakim is finally on Swedish soil. I hope that our government has very high on its priority list.

In an email to TT, the Foreign Ministry’s press service writes: “Joakim Medin receives consular support and the Consulate General in Istanbul is in contact with him”.

The e -mail also states that Turkey’s ambassador in Sweden was contacted to clarify the charges.
