The economics prize in memory of Alfred Nobel is announced

Research that has improved the understanding of women’s conditions in the labor market. This means that Claudia Goldin, USA, receives the Swedish Riksbank’s prize in economic science in memory of Alfred Nobel.

Why are women heavily underrepresented in the labor market and why do they also earn less than men? Using data and statistics spanning over 200 years, Claudia Goldin, working at Harvard University, has researched these questions.

Her research has explained why the wage gap between the two sexes has not decreased despite economic development.

Her work now means that she is awarded the Economics Prize in memory of Alfred Nobel.

“Thanks to Claudia Goldin’s pioneering research, we know much more about the underlying factors and which obstacles may need to be removed in the future,” says Jakob Svensson, chairman of the Economics Prize Committee in a press release.

It is the third time a woman has received the award. Ten years ago it went to Ellinor Ostrom.
