The men’s European Championship final between Spain and the Soviet Union at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid in 1964 attracted 79,115 spectators. Since then, no other EC match has had more people in the stands – whether on the men’s or women’s side.

Until now.

That the attendance record would be broken was not particularly surprising as tickets for the final at Wembley quickly sold out. And when the crowd numbers were announced at the end of the second half between England and Germany, there was a huge cheer as the new record figure of 87,192 was established.

Last year’s European Championship men’s final between England and Italy was also played at Wembley. But due to England’s corona restrictions, it could not be packed and instead the audience figure was 67,173 people.
