The drought in Europe reveals messages from the past

High temperatures and a lack of precipitation in Europe have led to water levels in several German rivers being lower than normal. In some places the riverbed is exposed and rocks that are usually hidden have been exposed. Some messages are several hundred years old.

During previous periods of drought, people have carved messages on the stones to remind of periods of bad harvests and famine. Names, years and sometimes a message are written.
